Azure Identity: trace an unavailable credential

An application reports CredentialUnavailableError even though you signed in through a developer tool. First identify which credential object failed and whether the application actually uses that developer-tool session.

01

Locate the credential that produced the message

Read the credential name in the failure and inspect how the application constructs it. EnvironmentCredential, AzureCliCredential, ManagedIdentityCredential, and DefaultAzureCredential do not represent the same authentication flow. A login in one tool does not automatically make every credential object use that session.

Our lab configured a tenant ID and client ID but deliberately omitted the secret and certificate paths. EnvironmentCredential could not construct a usable environment-based flow and reported CredentialUnavailableError before any token exchange.

02

Check configuration presence without printing secrets

For the client-secret environment flow, the library requires AZURE_TENANT_ID, AZURE_CLIENT_ID, and AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET. Certificate-based configuration has a different contract. Inspect only whether the intended variables are present, not their secret values.

The following check is for the client-secret flow specifically. It is not a requirement to add a client secret to every app; a developer CLI flow or deployed managed identity can be the intended design instead.

python · ÖRNEK
import os

required = ("AZURE_TENANT_ID", "AZURE_CLIENT_ID", "AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET")
print({name: bool(os.environ.get(name)) for name in required})

03

Choose the flow deliberately

For an application intentionally using environment credentials, provision the complete configuration through its normal secret mechanism. For a local application intended to use a developer login, select that supported credential flow or an appropriately scoped chain.

Do not assume every credential failure should silently fall through to another identity. CredentialUnavailableError and an actual authentication rejection have different meanings, and continuation behavior depends on the chain and credential type. Preserve that distinction when reading combined errors.

python · ÖRNEK
# Local development example: use the intended Azure CLI login.
from azure.identity import AzureCliCredential

credential = AzureCliCredential()
# Pass credential to the service client configured for the intended resource.

04

Verify the selected identity separately

Our explicit local chain tried the unavailable environment credential, then obtained a synthetic token from a fixture credential. That proves the tested chain’s control flow only. It does not prove that a real Azure identity exists or can access a storage account.

For an authorized developer investigation, inspect the active CLI account context and then test the intended service operation using the same application credential. A subscription display is useful context, but token acquisition and data-plane permissions remain separate checks.

sh · ÖRNEK
az account show --query '{subscription:id,tenant:tenantId,name:name}' --output json

05

Repair the source of accidental configuration

If stale environment variables select an unintended flow, correct the launcher, terminal, container configuration, or deployment settings that inject them. Avoid adding broader permissions to a different identity just to make one error disappear.

Repeat the credential selection check and the intended low-impact service request. Keep the credential class, tenant context, and resource endpoint in the investigation record while excluding tokens and secret values. That makes later identity changes easier to explain.

Sınırları bil

Validated with azure-identity 1.26.0 in a disposable container. An incomplete environment raised CredentialUnavailableError; an explicit chain then used a synthetic local fallback. No Entra token exchange, real CLI session, managed identity, or cloud authorization was tested.
